What is Success?
What motivates one man or woman succeed against formidable odds,
where others fail? This is a question which has been searched and
researched throughout the ages. If we knew the answer, I would
suppose that we'd all be successful. Most of us are successful to
some extent at some period within our lives. For some of us it was
winning the finger-painting competition in kindergarten. To others
success may come in the form of becoming president of some huge
organization. But what is it that gives one a consistent level of
success throughout life? And just what is success.
I would not venture to know hat success means to any one person.
Success may not even be measured in terms of stature, wealth, or
power. It may be measured in such an abstract quality as happiness.
I do believe that if you are a true success, I would have to say the
you have also discovered a fair amount of this quality in your life.
Recently, I have been reading a book about how to become
successful by author Tony Robins. We all know him. He's been selling
his motivational books and tapes which he guarantees will make you
as rich as he has become by selling them to you. (I'm not sure that
he really guarantees this.) Anthony Robbins' book, which has been
out for some while, Unlimited Power, mentions a quality
which I believe is shared by everyone who eventually becomes a
success. That quality is "passion." We're not talking
about the passion you see on daytime TV or the passion you have for
girls on South Beach. We are talking about a passion for what you
are doing with and where you are going in your life. This passion is
the key success factor in motivation for success.
It is easy to spot those who have a passion. They seem to have
more drive, more energy than the others. They seem to be more
confident in their actions. They are always working on and fostering
their passion. Those who don't have a passion seem to be lost. They
are like a person in a row boat which has only one oar and it is
locked down to one side of the boat. No matter how hard they paddle
or which direction, the boat just keeps turning in circles.
If you are one of these passionless people, you know it. My advice
to you is to look deep into your soul and find the things that
really make you happy. Finding and attaining those things should
become your passion. Even though they may not be status, wealth or
power driven, the things that make you personally happy will be
those things that make you successful in your own right.
Finding Your Passion
Many of us say, "I don't think I really have a passion."
Well, a passion is something that can be developed. It is not
something that we are born knowing, with the exception of a few
Motzarts here and there.
First think of things that you are passionate about. Do you yell
at George Bush whenever he comes on the television? Do you love to
cook breakfast? Do you like hunting and fishing? Do you hate
liberals? Are you a part-time magician? Do you play the bagpipes?
Collect china dolls? Hate gang members? Are you athletic and love
sports? Build model airplanes? Do you like to travel? Maybe you are
always taking things apart to see how they work. Anything like this
could be something pointing you in the direction of your passion.
Hobbies are easily transformed into passions. So are hatreds and the
desperate need for a change. Start a list of things you like, things
you hate, and things you wish were different. Then look at the list
and ask yourself "What would I really enjoy doing every day of
my life from this list?" Now start doing it in baby steps.
Learn to make your spare time into time you spend enjoying what you
want to enjoy. The next thing you know you will have a passion.
See you next time.
